How to install MyWebSQL on a CentOS VPS

MyWebSQL is a free and open source web based client for managing databases on your Linux VPS, and is written in PHP. It has a simple and intuitive interface with the look and feel of a desktop application. This PHP based application offers rich features for database management. With it’s fast and attractive web interface it is a very good alternative to the popular phpMyAdmin.

The setup of MyWebSQL is very fast and easy. Basically, no installation is needed. You just need to download and unpack the archive and you are ready to go. It even has a single file compact version with full functionality, which you can quickly deploy on your server.

In this tutorial we will show you how to setup MyWebSQL on a CentOS virtual server. Let’s start.

First of all you need to log in to your server as user ‘root’ and make sure that all packages are up-to-date

yum -y update

Download the latest stable release of MyWebSQL from their official website. At the moment of writing this tutorial it is version 3.4

wget http://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/mywebsql/stable/mywebsql-3.4.zip

Unzip the downloaded package to the Apache’s document root directory

unzip mywebsql-3.4.zip -d /var/www/html/

This will create a new ‘mywebsql’ directory under the document root directory.

After the archive is unpacked, MyWebSQL is already configured to use the best options for all parameters, so you can access it by pointing your favorite web browser to http://YOURDOMAIN.TLD/mywebsql

Enter your MySQL username and password as shown below and start managing your databases.

You can easily configure MyWebSQL according to your needs. All configuration files are located under the /var/www/html/mywebsql/config directory on your server:

ls /var/www/html/mywebsql/config
auth.php blobs.php constants.php editors.php lang.php servers.php updates.php
backups.php config.php database.php keys.php modules.php themes.php

All files can be be easily edited using a text editor. Most of the directives are commented to provide detailed information.

Of course you don’t have to do any of this if you use one of our Linux VPS Hosting services, in which case you can simply ask our expert Linux admins to install MyWebSQL for you. They are available 24×7 and will take care of your request immediately.
