\"spamassassin\"<\/a>In one of our previous articles we explained how one can setup and configure a simple but powerful mail server with Postfix, Dovecot, SASL and virtual users<\/a> in a Debian Squeeze VPS<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In the following article we’re going to implement SpamAssassin into the mail server setup<\/a> so that it can be used to identify and tag spam email messages.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

1.) Update the system<\/strong>
\nBefore proceeding with the setup we need to make sure our Debian Box<\/a> is fully up to date by issuing:<\/p>\n

# apt-get update<\/pre>\n
# apt-get upgrade<\/pre>\n
2.) Install SpamAssassin<\/strong>
\nonce the upgrade is completed install ‘SpamAssassin’ by executing:<\/p>\n
# apt-get install spamc spamassassin<\/pre>\n
3.) Setup unprivileged user\/group for SpamAssassin<\/strong><\/strong>
\nby default spamassassin will run under the ‘root’ user and running it like that is not as secure as it can be, so to make it more secure we should run it under different unprivileged user\/group.<\/p>\n
# groupadd -g 5555 spamd\n# useradd -u 5555 -g spamd -s \/sbin\/nologin -d \/usr\/local\/spamassassin spamd\n# mkdir -p \/usr\/local\/spamassassin\/log\n# chown spamd:spamd -R \/usr\/local\/spamassassin<\/pre>\n
4.) Setup SpamAssassin daemon options<\/strong><\/strong>
\nedit the ‘\/etc\/default\/spamassassin’ configuration file and make it looks like the one below:<\/p>\n
# \/etc\/default\/spamassassin\n# Duncan Findlay\n\n# WARNING: please read README.spamd before using.\n# There may be security risks.\n\n# Change to one to enable spamd\nENABLED=1\nSPAM_HOME=\"\/usr\/local\/spamassassin\"\n\n# Options\n# See man spamd for possible options. The -d option is automatically added.\n\n# SpamAssassin uses a preforking model, so be careful! You need to\n# make sure --max-children is not set to anything higher than 5,\n# unless you know what you're doing.\nOPTIONS=\"--create-prefs --max-children 5 --helper-home-dir ${SPAM_HOME} --username spamd -s ${SPAM_HOME}\/log\/spamd.log\"\n\n# Pid file\n# Where should spamd write its PID to file? If you use the -u or\n# --username option above, this needs to be writable by that user.\n# Otherwise, the init script will not be able to shut spamd down.\nPIDFILE=\"${SPAM_HOME}\/spamd.pid\"\n\n# Set nice level of spamd\n#NICE=\"--nicelevel 15\"\n\n# Cronjob\n# Set to anything but 0 to enable the cron job to automatically update\n# spamassassin's rules on a nightly basis\nCRON=0<\/pre>\n
5.) Configure SpamAssassin<\/strong><\/strong>
\nthe next think we need to do is to configure spamassassin. you do this by editing the ‘\/etc\/spamassassin\/local.cf’ and changing\/adding the following:<\/p>\n
rewrite_header Subject *****SPAM*****\nrequired_score 3.0\nreport_safe 0\nuse_bayes 1\n# Enable Bayes auto-learning\nbayes_auto_learn 1\n# Enable or disable network checks\nskip_rbl_checks 0\nuse_razor2 0\nuse_dcc 0\nuse_pyzor 0<\/pre>\n
6.) Configure Postfix to use\u00a0SpamAssassin
\n<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>to tell postfix to use spamassassin edit \/etc\/postfix\/master.cf and change the following:<\/p>\n
this:<\/p>\n
smtp \tinet  n \t-\t-\t-\t- \tsmtpd<\/pre>\n
with this:<\/p>\n
smtp \tinet  n \t-\t-\t-\t- \tsmtpd -o content_filter=spamassassin<\/pre>\n
and add the following to the end of the file:<\/p>\n
spamassassin unix - n n - - pipe\n  user=spamd argv=\/usr\/bin\/spamc -f -e \/usr\/sbin\/sendmail -oi -f ${sender} ${recipient}<\/pre>\n
finally, restart the services by:<\/p>\n
\/etc\/init.d\/spamassassin restart<\/pre>\n
\/etc\/init.d\/postfix restart<\/pre>\n
and that’s it.<\/p>\n
