With Confluence you can add custom features via plugins, integrate Microsoft Office and SharePoint, easily edit and publish project related tasks and more. Installing Confluence on CentOS 7, is an easy task and should take less than 15 minutes.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h5><strong>REQUIREMENTS<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>We will be using our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rosehosting.com\/centos-hosting.html\">CentOS 7 Linux VPS template<\/a> for this tutorial. Before proceeding you should <a href=\"https:\/\/confluence.atlassian.com\/doc\/system-requirements-126517514.html\">check the system requirements for Confluence.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The server on which you will install Confluence will need a working LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL &amp; PHP) stack installed. So if you need to install LAMP <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rosehosting.com\/blog\/how-to-install-lamp-linux-apache-mariadb-php-on-centos-7\/\">you can do that by following our excellent tutorials.<\/a>\u00a0 However, do not install MariaDB as shown in the tutorial since Confluence supports MySQL instead of MariaDB . Update the system<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>As always, make sure your server is fully up-to-date with the command below:<\/p>\n<pre># yum update<\/pre>\n<p>Also, install a text editor of your choice. We will use nano as our text editor:<\/p>\n<pre># yum install nano<\/pre>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2-Install-and-configure-Java\"><\/span><strong>2. Install and configure Java<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Confluence requires JAVA in order to run. We are going to install Oracle\u2019s JAVA JDK 8. Use the command below to download JDK 8:<\/p>\n<pre># wget --no-cookies --no-check-certificate --header \"Cookie: oraclelicense=accept-securebackup-cookie\" \"http:\/\/download.oracle.com\/otn-pub\/java\/jdk\/8u151-b12\/e758a0de34e24606bca991d704f6dcbf\/jdk-8u151-linux-x64.rpm\" -O \/opt\/jdk-8u151-linux-x64.rpm<\/pre>\n<p>Install JAVA:<\/p>\n<pre># yum install \/opt\/jdk-8-linux-x64.rpm<\/pre>\n<p>Configure the JAVA package using the alternatives command:<\/p>\n<pre># JDK_DIRS=($(ls -d \/usr\/java\/jdk*))\r\n\r\n# JDK_VER=${JDK_DIRS[@]:(-1)}\r\n\r\n# alternatives --install \/usr\/bin\/java java \/usr\/java\/\"${JDK_VER##*\/}\"\/jre\/bin\/java 20000\r\n\r\n# alternatives --install \/usr\/bin\/jar jar \/usr\/java\/\"${JDK_VER##*\/}\"\/bin\/jar 20000\r\n\r\n# alternatives --install \/usr\/bin\/javac javac \/usr\/java\/\"${JDK_VER##*\/}\"\/bin\/javac 20000\r\n\r\n# alternatives --install \/usr\/bin\/javaws javaws \/usr\/java\/\"${JDK_VER##*\/}\"\/jre\/bin\/javaws 20000\r\n\r\n# alternatives --set java \/usr\/java\/\"${JDK_VER##*\/}\"\/jre\/bin\/java\r\n\r\n# alternatives --set javaws \/usr\/java\/\"${JDK_VER##*\/}\"\/jre\/bin\/javaws\r\n\r\n# alternatives --set javac \/usr\/java\/\"${JDK_VER##*\/}\"\/bin\/javac<\/pre>\n<p>You can check if JAVA has been properly setup on your server using:<\/p>\n<pre># java -version<\/pre>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3-Install-MySQL-server\"><\/span><strong>3. Install MySQL server<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>You need to install MySQL from the community repository.<\/p>\n<p>Download and install the repo:<\/p>\n<pre># wget http:\/\/repo.mysql.com\/mysql-community-release-el7-5.noarch.rpm\r\n\r\n# sudo rpm -ivh mysql-community-release-el7-5.noarch.rpm<\/pre>\n<p>Update the package index:<\/p>\n<pre># yum update<\/pre>\n<p>Now install and start MySQL:<\/p>\n<pre># yum install mysql-server mysql-client\r\n\r\n# systemctl start mysqld<\/pre>\n<p>Enable MySQL to start on boot:<\/p>\n<pre># systemctl enable mysqld<\/pre>\n<p>With the MySQL installation out of our way, we can now create a database for the Confluence installation. But first, run the <em><strong>mysql_secure_installation<\/strong><\/em> script to harden your MySQL server:<\/p>\n<pre># mysql_secure_installation<\/pre>\n<p>Configure it like this:<\/p>\n<pre>- Set root password? [Y\/n] y\r\n- Remove anonymous users? [Y\/n] y\r\n- Disallow root login remotely? [Y\/n] y\r\n- Remove test database and access to it? [Y\/n] y\r\n- Reload privilege tables now? [Y\/n] y<\/pre>\n<p>Now, log into MySQL as root and create the database:<\/p>\n<pre># mysql -u root -p\r\n\r\nmysql&gt; CREATE DATABASE confluence CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_bin;\r\nQuery OK, 1 row affected (0.00 sec)\r\n\r\nmysql&gt; GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON confluence.* TO 'confluenceuser'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'your_password';\r\nQuery OK, 0 rows affected (0.00 sec)\r\n\r\nmysql&gt; flush privileges;\r\nQuery OK, 0 rows affected (0.00 sec)\r\n\r\nmysql&gt; exit<\/pre>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4-Install-Confluence-on-CentOS-7\"><\/span><strong>4. Install Confluence on CentOS 7<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>You need to download the appropriate Confluence <em><strong>&#8216;Linux 64-bit\/ 32-bit installer&#8217;<\/strong> <\/em>from their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlassian.com\/software\/confluence\/download\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">download page<\/a>.<br \/>\nWe are using a 64-bit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rosehosting.com\/centos-hosting.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CentOS 7 VPS<\/a>, so we will use the 64-bit installer.<\/p>\n<p>You can use the arch command to check whether you are running a 64 or 32 bit OS on your server. For example our CentOS 7 OS is 64-bit:<\/p>\n<pre>[root@<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rosehosting.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">linuxvps<\/a> \/]# arch\r\nx86_64<\/pre>\n<p>Ok, now let&#8217;s get down to business. We are downloading the 64-bit installer:<\/p>\n<pre># wget https:\/\/www.atlassian.com\/software\/confluence\/downloads\/binary\/atlassian-confluence-6.4.2-x64.bin<\/pre>\n<p>Make the bin file executable:<\/p>\n<pre># chmod a+x atlassian-confluence-6.4.2-x64.bin<\/pre>\n<p>Run the installer with &#8216;<em><strong>root<\/strong><\/em>&#8216; user privileges and the installation will create a dedicated Linux user account named &#8216;<em><strong>confluence<\/strong><\/em>&#8216; which will be used to run Confluence:<\/p>\n<pre># .\/atlassian-confluence-6.4.2-x64.bin<\/pre>\n<p>You will get the following output:<\/p>\n<pre>Unpacking JRE ...\r\nStarting Installer ...\r\nDec 03, 2015 10:43:54 AM java.util.prefs.FileSystemPreferences$1 run\r\nINFO: Created user preferences directory.\r\n\r\nThis will install Confluence 6.4.2 on your computer.\r\nOK [o, Enter], Cancel [c]<\/pre>\n<p>Press enter.<\/p>\n<pre>Choose the appropriate installation or upgrade option.\r\nPlease choose one of the following:\r\nExpress Install (uses default settings) [1],\r\nCustom Install (recommended for advanced users) [2, Enter],\r\nUpgrade an existing Confluence installation [3]<\/pre>\n<p>You can proceed with a custom install if you want, but we will enter <strong>1<\/strong> in our <strong>CLI<\/strong> for an Express install with the default settings:<\/p>\n<pre>See where Confluence will be installed and the settings that will be used.\r\nInstallation Directory: \/opt\/atlassian\/confluence\r\nHome Directory: \/var\/atlassian\/application-data\/confluence\r\nHTTP Port: 8090\r\nRMI Port: 8000\r\nInstall as service: Yes\r\nInstall [i, Enter], Exit [e]<\/pre>\n<p>Press Enter again to start the Confluence installation which will give you the below output:<\/p>\n<pre>Extracting files ...\r\n\r\nPlease wait a few moments while Confluence starts up.\r\nLaunching Confluence ...\r\nInstallation of Confluence 6.4.2 is complete\r\nYour installation of Confluence 6.4.2 is now ready and can be accessed via\r\nyour browser.\r\nConfluence 6.4.2 can be accessed at http:\/\/localhost:8090\r\nFinishing installation ...<\/pre>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5-Configure-Confluence\"><\/span>5. Configure Confluence<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>As you can see, Confluence is listening on port 8090. You can change this and the URI path in the <em><strong>server.xml<\/strong><\/em> file. And indeed, we need to change the URL from which we will access Confluence. Therefore, enter the <em><strong>conf<\/strong><\/em> directory:<\/p>\n<pre># cd \/opt\/atlassian\/confluence\/conf<\/pre>\n<p>However, you need to shutdown Confluence first and then edit the <em><strong>server.xml<\/strong><\/em> file.<\/p>\n<pre># sh \/opt\/atlassian\/confluence\/bin\/shutdown.sh\r\n\r\n# nano server.xml<\/pre>\n<p>Now, find the <em><strong>&#8216;localhost&#8217;<\/strong><\/em> value and replace it with your server IP address.<\/p>\n<p>Save and exit the file. Next step is to configure a MySQL datasource connection for Confluence. In order to do that, you need to install the MySQL JDBC driver. Below is the procedure to do that. Execute the below commands:<\/p>\n<pre># cd \/opt\r\n# wget http:\/\/dev.mysql.com\/get\/Downloads\/Connector-J\/mysql-connector-java-5.1.35.tar.gz\r\n# tar -zxvf mysql-connector-java-5.1.35.tar.gz\r\n# cd \/opt\/mysql-connector-java-5.1.35\r\n# mv mysql-connector-java-5.1.35-bin.jar \/opt\/atlassian\/confluence\/confluence\/WEB-INF\/lib\/<\/pre>\n<p>With these commands you are downloading the JDBC driver in the <em><strong>\/opt<\/strong><\/em> directory, extracting it and then move the unpacked jar file in the appropriate Confluence directory (<em><strong>\/opt\/atlassian\/confluence\/confluence\/WEB-INF\/lib\/<\/strong><\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>Next, edit the <em><strong>server.xml<\/strong><\/em> file again:<\/p>\n<pre># nano \/opt\/atlassian\/confluence\/conf\/server.xml<\/pre>\n<p>Find the following lines:<\/p>\n<pre>&lt;Context path=\"\" docBase=\"..\/confluence\" debug=\"0\" reloadable=\"true\"&gt;\r\n \u00a0 &lt;!-- Logger is deprecated in Tomcat 5.5. Logging configuration for Confluence is specified in confluence\/WEB-INF\/classes\/log4j.properties --&gt;<\/pre>\n<p>Insert the underneath lines within the Context element (between the &#8216;&lt;Context path=&#8221;&#8221; docBase=&#8221;&#8221; &#8216; and &#8216;&lt;!&#8211; Logger is deprecated in Tomcat 5.5.&#8221; &#8216; line):<\/p>\n<pre>&lt;Resource name=\"jdbc\/confluence\" auth=\"Container\" type=\"javax.sql.DataSource\"\r\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 username=\"confluenceuser\"\r\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 password=\"your_password\"\r\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 driverClassName=\"com.mysql.jdbc.Driver\"\r\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 url=\"jdbc:mysql:\/\/localhost:3306\/confluence?useUnicode=true&amp;amp;characterEncoding=utf8\"\r\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 maxActive=\"15\"\r\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 maxIdle=\"7\"\r\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 defaultTransactionIsolation=\"READ_COMMITTED\"\r\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 validationQuery=\"Select 1\" \/&gt;<\/pre>\n<p>Of course replace your_password with the password you configured during the creation of the <em><strong>confluence<\/strong><\/em> database. Save and close the file. Now edit the <em><strong>web.xml<\/strong><\/em> file located in the <em><strong>WEB-INF<\/strong><\/em> directory:<\/p>\n<pre># nano \/opt\/atlassian\/confluence\/confluence\/WEB-INF\/web.xml<\/pre>\n<p>Insert the following components just before\u00a0<em><strong>&lt;\/web-app&gt;<\/strong><\/em> near the end of the file:<\/p>\n<pre>&lt;resource-ref&gt;\r\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 &lt;description&gt;Connection Pool&lt;\/description&gt;\r\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 &lt;res-ref-name&gt;jdbc\/confluence&lt;\/res-ref-name&gt;\r\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 &lt;res-type&gt;javax.sql.DataSource&lt;\/res-type&gt;\r\n\u00a0\u00a0 &lt;res-auth&gt;Container&lt;\/res-auth&gt;\r\n&lt;\/resource-ref&gt;<\/pre>\n<p>Save and close the <em><strong>web.xml<\/strong><\/em> file.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6-Start-Confluence\"><\/span>6. Start Confluence<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>After all these changes you&#8217;ve made to the configuration files, you can now start Confluence. Issue this command:<\/p>\n<pre># sh \/opt\/atlassian\/confluence\/bin\/start-confluence.sh<\/pre>\n<p>For troubleshooting use the Confluence log file (<em><strong>\/opt\/atlassian\/confluence\/logs\/catalina.out<\/strong><\/em>).<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"7-Finish-the-installation-in-web-browser\"><\/span>7. Finish the installation in web browser<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>You can now finish the Confluence installation at: http:\/\/your_server_IP:8090 . You will be welcomed by the installation page as shown in the picture below:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-18305 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rosehosting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/confluence.png\" alt=\"confluence\" width=\"750\" height=\"513\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rosehosting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/confluence.png 820w, https:\/\/www.rosehosting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/confluence-300x205.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Click on <strong>Production Installation<\/strong><em> (you can choose a <strong>Trial Installation<\/strong><\/em> of course, since the Product install requires you to have an active Confluence license), choose if you want to have an addon and enter your license key in the following screen.<\/p>\n<p>Then, set up the database. Choose MySQL and Direct JDBC Connection.
