Check the version of Ubuntu<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>You can check whether you have the proper version of Ubuntu installed on our server with the below command:<\/p>\n<pre># lsb_release -a<\/pre>\n<p>Which should give you the underneath output:<\/p>\n<pre>Distributor ID: Ubuntu\r\nDescription:    Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS\r\nRelease:        14.04\r\nCodename:       trusty<\/pre>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4-Update-the-system\"><\/span><strong>4. Update the system<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Make sure your server is fully up to date. Also, install wget and unzip:<\/p>\n<pre># apt-get update &amp;&amp; apt-get upgrade\r\n\r\n# apt-get install unzip wget<\/pre>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5-Install-Oracle-Java-8\"><\/span><strong>5. Install Oracle Java 8<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Since Elasticsearch is written in Java, you will need to install a Java Runtime Environment on your server. Therefore, add the Java PPA repository in your Ubuntu system with the below command:<\/p>\n<pre># echo \"deb http:\/\/ppa.launchpad.net\/webupd8team\/java\/ubuntu trusty main\" | tee \/etc\/apt\/sources.list.d\/webupd8team-java.list\r\n\r\n# echo \"deb-src http:\/\/ppa.launchpad.net\/webupd8team\/java\/ubuntu trusty main\" | tee -a \/etc\/apt\/sources.list.d\/webupd8team-java.list\r\n\r\n# apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys EEA14886<\/pre>\n<p>Update the package index and install Java 8:<\/p>\n<pre># apt-get update\r\n\r\n# apt-get install oracle-java8-installer<\/pre>\n<p>Check if Java has been properly installed:<\/p>\n<pre># java -version<\/pre>\n<p>You should receive the following output:<\/p>\n<pre>java version \"1.8.0_72\"\r\nJava(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_72-b15)\r\nJava HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 25.72-b15, mixed mode)<\/pre>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6-Install-Elasticsearch-on-Ubuntu\"><\/span><strong>6. Install Elasticsearch on Ubuntu<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Download Elasticsearch from the respective <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elastic.co\/downloads\/elasticsearch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">website<\/a>. As you can see, downloads are available in zip, tar.gz, deb and rpm packages. For this install process which will run on Ubuntu it is better if you use the Debian package (deb) because it will install everything that is needed in order for Elasticsearch to run. Therefore, enter the below commands:<\/p>\n<pre># cd \/opt\r\n\r\n# wget https:\/\/download.elasticsearch.org\/elasticsearch\/release\/org\/elasticsearch\/distribution\/deb\/elasticsearch\/2.2.0\/elasticsearch-2.2.0.deb<\/pre>\n<p>Once the deb package is downloaded, install Elasticsearch using the <strong>dpkg<\/strong> command as shown below:<\/p>\n<pre># dpkg -i elasticsearch-2.2.0.deb<\/pre>\n<p>This installation procedure will install Elasticsearch in \/usr\/share\/elasticsearch\/ whose configuration files will be placed in \/etc\/elasticsearch<\/p>\n<p>The script that will be used to stop\/start\/restart this platform is \/etc\/init.d\/elasticsearch<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"7-Configure-Elasticsearch\"><\/span>7. Configure Elasticsearch<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Enter the following command to ensure that Elasticsearch will start automatically on boot.<\/p>\n<pre># update-rc.d elasticsearch defaults<\/pre>\n<p>Now let&#8217;s do some basic editing on the \/etc\/elasticsearch\/elasticsearch.yml file which is the main config file for Elasticsearch. Open the file with your favorite text editor. We are using nano:<\/p>\n<pre># nano \/etc\/elasticsearch\/elasticsearch.yml<\/pre>\n<p>Update the <strong>node.name<\/strong> and <strong>cluster.name<\/strong> values with your server name (hostname) and the name that the cluster will be associated with.
