Once you log in, run the following command to check the current system locale:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">locale<\/pre>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The output should be similar to the one below:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\"># locale\r\nLANG=\r\nLANGUAGE=\r\nLC_CTYPE=\"en_US.UTF-8\"\r\nLC_NUMERIC=\"en_US.UTF-8\"\r\nLC_TIME=\"en_US.UTF-8\"\r\nLC_COLLATE=\"en_US.UTF-8\"\r\nLC_MONETARY=\"en_US.UTF-8\"\r\nLC_MESSAGES=\"en_US.UTF-8\"\r\nLC_PAPER=\"en_US.UTF-8\"\r\nLC_NAME=\"en_US.UTF-8\"\r\nLC_ADDRESS=\"en_US.UTF-8\"\r\nLC_TELEPHONE=\"en_US.UTF-8\"\r\nLC_MEASUREMENT=\"en_US.UTF-8\"\r\nLC_IDENTIFICATION=\"en_US.UTF-8\"\r\nLC_ALL=en_US.UTF-8\r\n<\/pre>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-check-which-system-locales-are-enabled\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2-Check-which-system-locales-are-enabled\"><\/span>2. Check which system locales are enabled<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>By using the <code>locale<\/code> command you can see which locales are currently being used for your active terminal session. In the output above the system locale is set to <code>en_US.UTF-8<\/code>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Before setting up a different system locale you can first check which locales are enabled and ready to use on your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rosehosting.com\/debian-hosting.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Debian 9 VPS<\/a>. You can use the following command for that purpose:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">locale -a<\/pre>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The output should be similar to the one below:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\"># locale -a\r\nC\r\nC.UTF-8\r\nPOSIX\r\nen_US.utf8\r\n<\/pre>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>3.\u00a0 Generate a system locale for the region you need<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>If you don&#8217;t have the locale that you need to be enabled on your system, it can simply be generated by using the <code>locale-gen<\/code> command. Just run the following command to generate a locale for the region you need:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">dpkg-reconfigure locales<\/pre>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Select the locale that you want to be enabled and press <code>OK<\/code>. Verify is a system locale is enabled<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>This confirms\u00a0that the locale you selected is generated and you can use it on your system. To verify that it is enabled you can run the <code>locale -a<\/code> command again.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\"># locale -a\r\nC\r\nC.UTF-8\r\nPOSIX\r\nen_GB.utf8\r\nen_US.utf8\r\n<\/pre>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The output should contain the system locale you selected and generated with the previous command.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-changing-your-locale-manually\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5-Changing-your-locale-manually\"><\/span>5. Changing your locale manually<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Editing the locale file is very easy. You can use your favorite text editor to edit the\u00a0<code>\/etc\/default\/locale<\/code>\u00a0file. If this file does not exist, then no locale is currently set for your system. You can create one manually and enable a locale for your system. The output below shows how the file should look like:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">cat \/etc\/default\/locale\r\n#  File generated by update-locale\r\nLANG=en_US.UTF-8\r\nLC_ALL=en_US.UTF-8\r\n<\/pre>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Replace <code>en_US.UTF-8<\/code> with the locale you wish to have active on your system and save the file. Once you save the file, log out from your current session and then log back in, or open a new terminal, and your newly chosen locale will be active.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>NOTE: This example file only sets the <code>LANG<\/code> variable for your system, which covers the locale for all parts of the system.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-6-changing-your-locale-using-the-update-locale-command\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6-Changing-your-locale-using-the-update-locale-command\"><\/span>6. Changing your locale using the update-locale command<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Another way of changing the locale on your system is to by using the <code>update-locale<\/code> command. For example, to set the system locale to <code>en_GB.utf8<\/code> use the following command:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">update-locale LANG=en_GB.utf8<\/pre>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Again, restart the session and check the currently active locale to make sure the one you want is properly set up.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\"># locale\r\nLANG=en_GB.utf8\r\nLANGUAGE=\r\nLC_CTYPE=\"en_GB.utf8\"\r\nLC_NUMERIC=\"en_GB.utf8\"\r\nLC_TIME=\"en_GB.utf8\"\r\nLC_COLLATE=\"en_GB.utf8\"\r\nLC_MONETARY=\"en_GB.utf8\"\r\nLC_MESSAGES=\"en_GB.utf8\"\r\nLC_PAPER=\"en_GB.utf8\"\r\nLC_NAME=\"en_GB.utf8\"\r\nLC_ADDRESS=\"en_GB.utf8\"\r\nLC_TELEPHONE=\"en_GB.utf8\"\r\nLC_MEASUREMENT=\"en_GB.utf8\"\r\nLC_IDENTIFICATION=\"en_GB.utf8\"\r\nLC_ALL=\r\n<\/pre>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-7-changing-the-locale-for-specific-parts-of-the-operating-system\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"7-Changing-the-locale-for-specific-parts-of-the-operating-system\"><\/span>7. Changing the locale for specific parts of the operating system<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Updating the <code>LANG<\/code> variable allows you to change the locale for the entire system at once. If you want to set up the locale for a specific part of the system you should edit the appropriate variable.
