While there have been several successful GUI implementations, they haven&#8217;t really caught on with mainstream admins for the following reasons:<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The command line is faster for well-defined tasks<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A GUI is an extremely resource intensive, and a server needs all the CPU time it can get<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s easier to follow a set of instructions with one command after the other<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most Linux administration happens remotely &#8211; so a full GUI is a bit of a headache<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, we can overcome some of these limitations (particularly point No. 2) by having a browser-based GUI that connects remotely and offloads all the graphics to the user&#8217;s browser. It&#8217;s easy to set up, and you can carry out most admin tasks using it, including monitoring resource usage graphically, creating and managing users, installing software, updating it etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Best of all, it comes nicely packaged with a yum repository, so there&#8217;s no need for you to do any manual configuration. It all works out of the box. Let&#8217;s get started!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Note: You&#8217;ll need sudo privileges for a lot of steps in this tutorial. So either make sure you&#8217;re included in the &#8220;sudoers&#8221; file or execute these with elevated privileges.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step-1-Add-the-Repo-to-CentOS\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Step 1: Add the Repo to CentOS<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since we want to install everything via yum, first create the file:<\/span><\/p>\n<pre><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vi \/etc\/yum.repos.d\/webmin.repo<\/span><\/pre>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And add the following lines to it:<\/span><\/p>\n<pre><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[Webmin]<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">name=Webmin Distribution Neutral<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#baseurl=https:\/\/download.webmin.com\/download\/yum<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mirrorlist=https:\/\/download.webmin.com\/download\/yum\/mirrorlist<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">enabled=1<\/span><\/pre>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next, we need the public key from the Webmin site to ensure that the files we receive are not tampered with:<\/span><\/p>\n<pre><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wget http:\/\/www.webmin.com\/jcameron-key.asc<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rpm --import jcameron-key.asc<\/span><\/pre>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now we&#8217;ve configured the source. Time to install Webmin.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step-2-Install-Webmin\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Step 2: Install Webmin<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We&#8217;ve already done the hard work in step 1. We can install it with:<\/span><\/p>\n<pre><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yum install webmin<\/span><\/pre>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Click &#8220;yes&#8221; to complete the install. The yum command automatically installs all the dependencies, so you don&#8217;t have to do any more work. With one exception. When you log into Webmin you may see this error:<\/span><\/p>\n<pre><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\"No Perl MD5 hashing module found!\"\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-28945\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rosehosting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/No-Perl-MD5-hashing-module-found.jpg\" alt=\"No Perl MD5 hashing module found\" width=\"650\" height=\"385\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rosehosting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/No-Perl-MD5-hashing-module-found.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.rosehosting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/No-Perl-MD5-hashing-module-found-150x89.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.rosehosting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/No-Perl-MD5-hashing-module-found-300x178.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/span><\/pre>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is because of a missing module. Install it separately with yum:<\/span><\/p>\n<pre><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yum install perl-Digest-MD5<\/span><\/pre>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And you&#8217;re done!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step-3-Logging-into-Webmin\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Step 3: Logging into Webmin<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the installation has gone smoothly, you can log into Webmin using the following address on your browser:<\/span><\/p>\n<pre><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[yourIPAddress]<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:10000\/<\/span><\/pre>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To get your IP address on Linux, use the &#8220;ifconfig&#8221; command like this:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-28946\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rosehosting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Get-your-IP-Address.jpg\" alt=\"Get your IP Address\" width=\"650\" height=\"392\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rosehosting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Get-your-IP-Address.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.rosehosting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Get-your-IP-Address-150x90.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.rosehosting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Get-your-IP-Address-300x181.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.rosehosting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Get-your-IP-Address-440x264.jpg 440w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plug in this IP address into the browser address bar and you&#8217;re on your way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The one problem, however, is that the latest versions of Webmin enable SSL by default. So you&#8217;ll probably get this error message:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Error &#8211; Document follows. This web server is running in SSL mode&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-28947\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rosehosting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Web-Server-Running-in-SSL-Mode.jpg\" alt=\"Web Server Running in SSL Mode\" width=\"650\" height=\"271\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rosehosting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Web-Server-Running-in-SSL-Mode.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.rosehosting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Web-Server-Running-in-SSL-Mode-150x63.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.rosehosting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Web-Server-Running-in-SSL-Mode-300x125.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No avoid this, access the address using &#8220;https&#8221; instead. So the URL becomes:<\/span><\/p>\n<pre><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">https:\/\/<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> [yourIPAddress]<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:10000\/<\/span><\/pre>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You&#8217;ll get a warning on Chrome about an insecure site.
