A production server should have a minimum total of 4 GB of RAM.<\/li>\n<li>Full SSH access using the root account, or a user with sudo privileges is also required.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step-1-Getting-Started\"><\/span>Step 1: Getting Started<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Connect to your server via SSH as the root user using the following command:<\/p>\n<pre>ssh root@IP_ADDRESS -p PORT_NUMBER<\/pre>\n<p>and replace \u201c<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">IP_ADDRESS<\/span>\u201d and \u201c<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">PORT_NUMBER<\/span>\u201d with your actual server IP address and SSH port number. Replace &#8216;root&#8217; to a different account&#8217;s username if necessary.<\/p>\n<p>Before starting with the installation, you will need to update your system packages to their latest versions.<\/p>\n<p>You can do this by running the following command:<\/p>\n<pre>apt-get update \r\napt-get upgrade<\/pre>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step-2-Install-Nodejs\"><\/span>Step 2: Install Node.js<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>On Debian systems, you can install Node.js from the NodeSource repository:<\/p>\n<pre>$ apt-get update\r\n$ apt install curl git gcc g++ make<\/pre>\n<p>After that, install the Node.js repository with the following command<\/p>\n<pre>$ curl -sL https:\/\/deb.nodesource.com\/setup_12.x | sudo -E bash -<\/pre>\n<p>After that, run the commands below to install Node.js:<\/p>\n<pre>$ apt-get install nodejs<\/pre>\n<h2 class=\"heading1\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step-3-Check-the-Nodejs-Version\"><\/span>Step 3: Check the Node.js Version<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>After completing the installation, check and verify the installed version of Node.js and NPM. You can find more details about the current version on the Node.js <a href=\"https:\/\/nodejs.org\/download\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">official website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<pre><strong>$ node -v <\/strong>\r\n\r\nv12.2.0\r\n<\/pre>\n<p>Also, check the version of NPM.<\/p>\n<pre><strong>$ npm -v <\/strong>\r\n\r\n6.9.0<\/pre>\n<p>If they are the versions shown above or newer, you can proceed with the next step.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step-4-Install-the-MongoDB-Database-Server\"><\/span>Step 4: Install the MongoDB Database Server<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>MongoDB is the default database server for Wekan. Start the installation by importing the public key used by the package management system.<\/p>\n<pre>$ apt-key adv --keyserver hkp:\/\/keyserver.ubuntu.com:80 --recv 9DA31620334BD75D9DCB49F368818C72E52529D4<\/pre>\n<p>Add the MongoDB repository:<\/p>\n<pre>echo \"deb http:\/\/repo.mongodb.org\/apt\/debian stretch\/mongodb-org\/4.0 main\" | sudo tee \/etc\/apt\/sources.list.d\/mongodb-org-4.0.list<\/pre>\n<p>Update the apt package index and install the MongoDB server:<\/p>\n<pre>$ apt-get update\r\n$ apt-get install -y mongodb-org<\/pre>\n<p>Start the MongoDB service:<\/p>\n<pre>$ systemctl start mongod.service\r\n$ systemctl enable mongod.service<\/pre>\n<p>Verify installation of MongoDB. You should have version <strong>4.0 or later:<\/strong><\/p>\n<pre>$ <strong>mongod --version<\/strong>\r\ndb version v4.0.9\r\ngit version: fc525e2d9b0e4bceff5c2201457e564362909765\r\nOpenSSL version: OpenSSL 1.1.0j  20 Nov 2018\r\nallocator: tcmalloc\r\nmodules: none\r\nbuild environment:\r\n    distmod: debian92\r\n    distarch: x86_64\r\n    target_arch: x86_64\r\n<\/pre>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step-5-Configure-MongoDB\"><\/span>Step 5: Configure MongoDB<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>We need to configure the MongoDB authentication. We will log in to the mongo shell and create a new \u2018admin\u2019 superuser.\u00a0Log in to MongoDB by running the following command:<\/p>\n<pre>mongo<\/pre>\n<p>Then switch to the DB admin and create a new admin user:<\/p>\n<pre>use admin<\/pre>\n<p>We will run the Mongo query below to create a new admin user with password and set the role as root.<\/p>\n<pre>db.createUser(\r\n{\r\nuser: \"admin\",\r\npwd: \"<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">MyAdminPassword<\/span>\",\r\nroles: [ { role: \"root\", db: \"admin\" } ]\r\n}\r\n)<\/pre>\n<p>Make sure to replace &#8216;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">MyAdminPassword<\/span>&#8216; with a strong password.<\/p>\n<p>The Admin user has now been created.<\/p>\n<p>Restart the MongoDB service and the MongoDB authentication should be enabled.<\/p>\n<pre>systemctl restart mongod<\/pre>\n<p>We need to create a new database named \u2018wekan\u2019 with user \u2018wekan\u2019 with password \u2018<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">StrongPassword<\/span>\u2019. Change the password accordingly.<\/p>\n<p>Login to the mongo shell as the admin user.<\/p>\n<pre>mongo -u admin -p<\/pre>\n<p>In the Mongo shell we will run the following queries:<\/p>\n<pre>use wekan\r\ndb.createUser(\r\n{\r\nuser: \"wekan\",\r\npwd: \"<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">StrongPassword<\/span>\",\r\nroles: [\"readWrite\"]\r\n}\r\n)<\/pre>\n<p>We successfully created a database and user for Wekan installation.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step-6-Install-Wekan\"><\/span>Step 6: Install Wekan<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>First, let&#8217;s create a <code>wekan<\/code> user so that root does not run your Wekan application.<\/p>\n<pre>$ adduser wekan --disabled-login --no-create-home<\/pre>\n<p>We will log in as the \u2018wekan\u2019 user.<\/p>\n<pre>$ su - wekan<\/pre>\n<p>We will download the latest version wekan source code using the wget command and extract it.<\/p>\n<pre>$ wget https:\/\/github.com\/wekan\/wekan\/releases\/download\/v0.63\/wekan-0.63.tar.gz\r\n$ tar xf wekan-0.63.tar.gz<\/pre>\n<p>We also will make our new user own all of the Wekan install directories so that it can run them without any problems:<\/p>\n<pre>$ chown -R wekan:wekan \/opt\/bundle<\/pre>\n<p>We will go to that directory and install the Wekan dependencies using the &#8216;npm&#8217; command.<\/p>\n<pre>$ cd \/opt\/bundle\/programs\/server\r\n$ npm install<\/pre>\n<p>Now we will run the following commands to create the environment variables for the Wekan application.<\/p>\n<pre>$ export MONGO_URL='mongodb:\/\/wekan:StrongPassword@127.0.0.1:27017\/wekan?authSource=wekan'\r\n$ export ROOT_URL='http:\/\/your_ip_address\/'\r\n$ export MAIL_URL='smtp:\/\/user:pass@your_domain.com:25\/'\r\n$ export MAIL_FROM='wekan@your_domain.com'\r\n$ export PORT=8000<\/pre>\n<p>We will go to the \u2018bundle\u2019 directory and run the Wekan Node.js application.<\/p>\n<pre>$ cd \/opt\/bundle\r\n$ node main.js<\/pre>\n<p>Wekan has been successfully installed and it is listening on port 8000.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step-7-Configure-Wekan-SystemD-Service\"><\/span>Step 7: Configure Wekan SystemD Service<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>You now have Wekan up and running, but it will stop running once you close the terminal session. To prevent this, we need to create a SystemD service so that it&#8217;s run by the system instead of the user.<\/p>\n<p>Create a file named <code>wekan.service<\/code> in <code>\/etc\/systemd\/system\/<\/code>, using your preferred text editor:<\/p>\n<pre>$ cd \/etc\/systemd\/system\/\r\n$ nano wekan.service<\/pre>\n<p>Paste the following content:<\/p>\n<pre>[Unit]\r\nDescription=Wekan Server\r\nAfter=syslog.target\r\nAfter=network.target\r\n\r\n[Service]\r\nType=simple\r\nRestart=always\r\nStandardOutput=syslog\r\nSyslogIdentifier=Wekan\r\nUser=wekan\r\nGroup=wekan\r\nEnvironment=MONGO_URL=mongodb:\/\/127.0.0.1:27017\/wekan\r\nEnvironment=ROOT_URL=https:\/\/<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">example.com<\/span>\r\nEnvironment=PORT=8000\r\nEnvironment=MAIL_URL=smtp:\/\/user:pass@mailserver.<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">example.com<\/span>:25\/\r\nWorkingDirectory=\/opt\/bundle\r\nExecStart=\/usr\/bin\/node \/opt\/bundle\/main.js\r\n\r\n[Install]\r\nWantedBy=multi-user.target\r\n<\/pre>\n<p>Make sure to replace &#8216;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">example.com<\/span>&#8216; with your registered domain name. Save and close the file.<br \/>\nTo make the SystemD aware of this new file, run the following command:<\/p>\n<pre>$ systemctl daemon-reload<\/pre>\n<p>Start the Wekan service and enable it.<\/p>\n<pre>$ systemctl start wekan\r\n$ systemctl enable wekan<\/pre>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step-8-Access-Wekan\"><\/span><span id=\"Step-5-Access-Wekan\" class=\"ez-toc-section\">Step 8: Access Wekan<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Open your favorite web browser and type the URL <code><strong>http:\/\/your_ip_address:8000<\/strong><\/code>.
