Once deployed, you will be able to monitor your virtual servers<\/a> and the services running on them.<\/p>\n

Nagios3<\/strong> is a robust and very powerful monitoring system, which in combination with Check_MK<\/strong> will provide you with a nice and easy way to monitor your virtual servers<\/strong> and services.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

UPDATE THE SYSTEM<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Make sure you are in a screen session and check if your Linux VPS<\/a> is fully up-to-date by running:<\/p>\n

## screen -U -S nagios-check-mk\r\n## apt-get update\r\n## apt-get upgrade<\/pre>\n
INSTALL DEPENDENCIES<\/strong><\/h3>\n
Install some required (useful)<\/i> packages on the system using apt<\/code><\/p>\n
## apt-get install dialog xinetd build-essential apache2 libapache2-mod-python<\/pre>\n
INSTALL NAGIOS<\/strong><\/h3>\n
Install Nagios and Nagios NRPE (Nagios Remote Plugin Executor) Plugins on your Linux VPS<\/a> by running<\/p>\n
## apt-get install nagios3 nagios-nrpe-plugin<\/pre>\n
you should be prompted to enter your nagiosadmin user’s password as shown below<\/p>\n
\"Nagios<\/a><\/p>\n
if for some reason you’re not, then use the following command to set your nagiosadmin user’s password:<\/p>\n
## htpasswd -c \/etc\/nagios3\/htpasswd.users nagiosadmin<\/pre>\n
proceed with adding Apache’s www-data<\/code> user to the nagios<\/code> group:<\/p>\n
## usermod -a -G nagios www-data<\/pre>\n
edit Nagios3 configuration file in \/etc\/nagios3\/nagios.cfg<\/code> and enable external commands by setting check_external_commands<\/code> from 0 to 1:<\/p>\n
## vim +\/check_external_commands \/etc\/nagios3\/nagios.cfg<\/pre>\n
restart Nagios and Apache<\/p>\n
## service apache2 restart\r\n## service nagios3 restart<\/pre>\n
INSTALL CHECK_MK<\/strong><\/h3>\n
At the time of writing this article, the latest version of check_mk<\/code> is ver 1.2.4<\/code>. Make sure you check here<\/a> if a newer version is available.<\/p>\n
## cd \/opt\r\n## ver=1.2.4\r\n## wget http:\/\/mathias-kettner.com\/download\/check_mk-${ver}.tar.gz\r\n## tar -zxf check_mk-${ver}.tar.gz\r\n## cd check_mk-${ver}<\/pre>\n
run the installer by executing the setup.sh<\/code> script<\/p>\n
## .\/setup.sh<\/pre>\n
once the installation is completed, check if check_mk<\/code> is installed on the system using:<\/p>\n
## check_mk --version<\/pre>\n
RESTART SERVICES<\/strong><\/h3>\n
Restart the Apache webserver and the Nagios monitoring system using the following commands:<\/p>\n
## service nagios3 restart\r\n## service apache2 restart<\/pre>\n

INSTALL CHECK_MK AGENT<\/strong><\/h3>\n
In order to be able to monitor other servers, you need to install an agent which will communicate with the check_mk server. The easiest way to test the set-up is to install an agent on the Nagios server itself, so since this is an Ubuntu based virtual server<\/strong>, download the latest version of the agent from here<\/a> and install it using:<\/p>\n
## wget -P \/tmp http:\/\/mathias-kettner.com\/download\/check-mk-agent_1.2.4-2_all.deb\r\n## dpkg -i \/tmp\/check-mk-agent_1.2.4-2_all.deb<\/pre>\n
edit agent’s configuration file in \/etc\/xinetd.d\/check_mk<\/code> and set the following:<\/p>\n
## vim \/etc\/xinetd.d\/check_mk\r\nonly_from       = <YOUR_NAGIOS_IP><\/pre>\n
restart xinetd<\/code> for the change to take effect<\/p>\n
## service xinetd restart<\/pre>\n
