What is Grails?<\/strong><\/p>\n

It is an open source<\/strong> web application framework that uses the Groovy programming language which is in turn based on the Java<\/strong> platform.<\/p>\n

UPDATE THE SYSTEM<\/b><\/h3>\n

Before you proceed with the installation of Grails and JAVA<\/strong>, make sure you have initiated a new screen<\/code> session and your Ubuntu 14.04 VPS<\/a> is fully up-to-date by running the commands below:<\/p>\n

## screen -U -S grails-screen\n## apt-get update\n## apt-get upgrade<\/pre>\n
INSTALL JAVA<\/b><\/h3>\n
Grails can run either under the open source implementation of JAVA or the one provided by Oracle. We will cover the steps of installing both of them, so you can choose which one you want to use.<\/p>\n
NOTE: You have to use one JAVA version only. Either use the open source version or the one provided by Oracle. You don’t have to install both JAVA versions.
\n<\/em><\/p>\n
a) INSTALL OPEN SOURCE JAVA<\/b><\/h4>\n
Installing the open source implementation of JAVA 7<\/strong> can’t be easier than issuing the following command:<\/p>\n
## apt-get install openjdk-7-jdk<\/pre>\n
b) INSTALL ORACLE JAVA<\/b><\/h4>\n
The best and recommended way to install Oracle JAVA<\/strong> is to use a PPA and install JAVA using apt<\/code> as in:<\/p>\n
## apt-get install software-properties-common\n## add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team\/java\n## apt-get update\n## apt-get install oracle-java8-installer\n## apt-get install oracle-java8-set-default<\/pre>\n
– VERIFY JAVA INSTALLATION<\/b><\/h4>\n
To verify if JAVA has been successfully installed and set-up, run the following command:<\/p>\n
## java -version<\/pre>\n
INSTALL SDKMAN
\n<\/b><\/h3>\n
Installing SDKMAN , formerly known as GVM (Grails\/Groovy environment<\/i>) is done by their automatic shell script installer. You need curl<\/code> to download and run the script, so run the following commands:<\/p>\n
## apt-get install curl\n## curl -s \"https:\/\/get.sdkman.io\" | bash<\/pre>\n
load the sdkman-init.sh<\/code> script in your environment using:<\/p>\n
## source ~\/.sdkman\/bin\/sdkman-init.sh\n## gvm help<\/pre>\n
Once the GVM package manager is installed and set-up on your Ubuntu 14.04 VPS<\/a>, use the following command to install grails<\/code>:<\/p>\n
## sdk install grails<\/pre>\n
SET-UP TEST GRAILS PROJECT<\/b><\/h3>\n
## mkdir \/projects\n## grails create-app \/projects\/test-project\n## cd \/projects\/test-project\n## grails run-app<\/pre>\n
Once the Grails application is deployed, you can access it at http:\/\/SERVER_IP:8080\/projects\/test-project<\/a>.<\/p>\n
