\"Java_logo_and_wordmark.svg\"<\/a>This how-to will show you how to install Tomcat 7.x and JDK 7.x (Java Development Kit) on a CentOS VPS<\/a>.<\/p>\n

You could get one of our Java Hosting<\/a> plans and have everything already installed and configured but if you want to do it yourself just follow the tutorial below.<\/p>\n

1. Install JDK<\/strong>
\nChoose the correct version for your OS and download the latest JDK release from http:\/\/www.oracle.com\/technetwork\/java\/javase\/downloads\/index.html<\/p>\n

Create a new ‘\/usr\/java’ directory, move the downloaded ‘jdk’ file to ‘\/usr\/java’ and change to the created directory:<\/p>\n

# mkdir \/usr\/java && mv jdk-7u4-linux-i586.tar.gz \/usr\/java\/ && cd \/usr\/java\/<\/pre>\n
Unpack jdk-7u4-linux-i586.tar.gz file:<\/p>\n
# tar -xzf jdk-7u4-linux-i586.tar.gz<\/pre>\n
This will create directory, in our case it’s ‘jdk1.7.0_04’<\/p>\n
To set the ‘JAVA_HOME’ path add the lines below to your ‘.bash_profile’ file:<\/p>\n
export JAVA_HOME=\/usr\/java\/jdk1.7.0_04\/\r\nexport PATH=$JAVA_HOME\/bin:$PATH\r\nexport PATH=$PATH:$JAVA_HOME\/bin<\/pre>\n
For the changes to take effect execute:<\/p>\n
# source .bash_profile<\/pre>\n
Check if the ‘JAVA_HOME’ is set correctly:<\/p>\n
# echo $JAVA_HOME\r\n# \/usr\/java\/jdk1.7.0_04\/<\/pre>\n
2. Install Tomcat 7<\/strong><\/p>\n
Download the latest Tomcat release (currently 7.0.27) from http:\/\/tomcat.apache.org\/download-70.cgi<\/p>\n
# wget http:\/\/mirror.metrocast.net\/apache\/tomcat\/tomcat-7\/v7.0.27\/bin\/apache-tomcat-7.0.27.tar.gz<\/pre>\n
Move the file and change to the ‘\/usr\/share\/’ directory:<\/p>\n
# mv apache-tomcat-7.0.27.tar.gz \/usr\/share\/ && cd \/usr\/share\/<\/pre>\n
Unpack ‘apache-tomcat-7.0.27.tar.gz’ file:<\/p>\n
# tar -xzf apache-tomcat-7.0.27.tar.gz<\/pre>\n
This will create ‘\/usr\/share\/apache-tomcat-7.0.27’ directory. Optionally, you can rename this directory to ‘tomcat7’:<\/p>\n
# mv \/usr\/share\/apache-tomcat-7.0.27\/ \/usr\/share\/tomcat7<\/pre>\n
To configure Tomcat 7 to run as a service, change to the ‘\/etc\/init.d\/’:<\/p>\n
# cd \/etc\/init.d\/<\/pre>\n
Using your favorite text editor, create a script called ‘tomcat’ with the following text:<\/p>\n
#!\/bin\/bash\r\n# description: Tomcat Start - Stop - Restart\r\n# processname: tomcat\r\n# chkconfig: 234 20 80\r\nJAVA_HOME=\/usr\/java\/jdk1.7.0_04\r\nexport JAVA_HOME\r\nPATH=$JAVA_HOME\/bin:$PATH\r\nexport PATH\r\nCATALINA_HOME=\/usr\/share\/tomcat7 \r\n\r\ncase $1 in\r\nstart)\r\necho \"Starting Tomcat\"\r\nsh $CATALINA_HOME\/bin\/startup.sh\r\n;;\r\nstop)\r\necho \"Stopping Tomcat\"\r\nsh $CATALINA_HOME\/bin\/shutdown.sh\r\n;;\r\nrestart)\r\necho \"Restarting Tomcat\"\r\nsh $CATALINA_HOME\/bin\/shutdown.sh\r\nsh $CATALINA_HOME\/bin\/startup.sh\r\n;;\r\n*)\r\necho $\"Usage: $0 {start|stop}\"\r\nexit 1\r\n;;\r\nesac\r\nexit 0<\/pre>\n
Make your script executable:<\/p>\n
# chmod +x tomcat<\/pre>\n
Make your Tomcat to start at boot time:<\/p>\n
# chkconfig --add tomcat\r\n# chkconfig --level 3 tomcat on<\/pre>\n
Check if it is setup correctly:<\/p>\n
# chkconfig --list tomcat<\/pre>\n
The default Tomcat port is 8080, so you can try to access it at http:\/\/domain.com:8080 where you should see Tomcat’s default home page.<\/p>\n
