In this tutorial we will show you how to install Magento and configure Redis (an open source advanced key-value cache and store) for back end caching on an Ubuntu VPS<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Download the latest version of Magento from www.magentocommerce.com, extract it and move the Magento installation to the ‘\/var\/www\/html\/magento\/’ directory on your VPS:<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

cd \/root\/\r\nwget http:\/\/www.magentocommerce.com\/downloads\/assets\/1.9.0.1\/magento-1.9.0.1.tar.gz\r\ntar -xzvf magento-1.9.0.1.tar.gz\r\n\r\nmv \/root\/magento \/var\/www\/html\/magento\/<\/pre>\n
Set proper permissions:<\/p>\n
chown www-data:www-data -R \/var\/www\/html\/magento\/\r\ncd \/var\/www\/html\/magento\r\nchmod -R o+w app\/etc\/\r\nchmod -R o+w var\/\r\nchmod -R o+w media\/<\/pre>\n
Create a new database for Magento:<\/p>\n
mysql -u root -p \r\nmysql> create database magentodb;\r\nmysql> GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON magentodb . * TO magento@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'your-password' WITH GRANT OPTION;\r\nmysql> flush privileges;\r\nmysql> quit\r\n<\/pre>\n
Install Redis:<\/p>\n
apt-get install redis-server<\/pre>\n
Install phpRedis extension via PECL:<\/p>\n
apt-get install php5-dev\r\npecl install redis<\/pre>\n
Add ‘extension=redis.so’ to the ‘php.ini’ configuration file. To locate the ‘php.ini’ configuration file, use the following command:<\/p>\n
php -i | grep php.ini\r\nConfiguration File (php.ini) Path => \/etc\/php5\/cli\r\nLoaded Configuration File => \/etc\/php5\/cli\/php.ini<\/pre>\n
Or, create ‘redis.ini’ file in the ‘\/etc\/php5\/mods-available\/’ directory:<\/p>\n
vi \/etc\/php5\/mods-available\/redis.ini<\/pre>\n
and add these lines:<\/p>\n
; configuration for php Redis module\r\nextension=redis.so<\/pre>\n
Then, run the following command:<\/p>\n
php5enmod redis<\/pre>\n
Also, enable PHP mcrypt extension as it is required by Magento:<\/p>\n
php5enmod mcrypt<\/pre>\n
Create a new virtual host directive in Apache. For example, create a new Apache configuration file named ‘magento.conf’:<\/p>\n
vi \/etc\/apache2\/sites-available\/magento.conf<\/pre>\n
and add the following lines:<\/p>\n
<VirtualHost *:80>\r\n   ServerAdmin admin@your-domain.com\r\n   DocumentRoot \/var\/www\/html\/magento\/\r\n   ServerName your-domain.com\r\n   ServerAlias www.your-domain.com\r\n      <Directory \/var\/www\/html\/magento\/>\r\n         Options Indexes FollowSymLinks MultiViews\r\n         AllowOverride All\r\n         Order allow,deny\r\n         allow from all\r\n      <\/Directory>\r\n   ErrorLog \/var\/log\/apache2\/your-domain.com-error_log\r\n   CustomLog \/var\/log\/apache2\/your-domain.com-access_log common\r\n<\/VirtualHost><\/pre>\n
Restart Apache for the changes to take effect using the following command:<\/p>\n
service apache2 restart<\/pre>\n
Open http:\/\/your-domain.com\/index.php\/install and follow the easy instructions.<\/p>\n

Then, edit the ‘local.xml’ file located to the ‘\/var\/www\/html\/magento\/app\/etc\/’ directory:<\/p>\n

and add the following lines after \u00a0<session_save><![CDATA[files]]><\/session_save><\/p>\n

Next, delete cache and sessions:<\/p>\n
rm -rf \/var\/www\/html\/magento\/var\/session\/*\r\nrm -rf \/var\/www\/html\/magento\/var\/cache\/*<\/pre>\n
Or, log in to the Admin panel as an administrator, click ‘System’ > ‘Cache Management’, then click ‘Flush Magento Cache’.<\/p>\n
That is it. Magento is installed and configured to use Redis as back end cache.<\/p>\n
